It is interesting how most of our politicians take umbrage at the very idea of actually sitting down to talk to the rulers of countries of which we do not approve —and which disapprove of us. They seem to think it much more effective to take the position of “my army is bigger than yours”……. “Our form of democracy (or Christianity…. or economics) is what you people need, and here it is, like it or not!”Well, as Martin Luther Kingalso said, “We have guided missiles, and misguided leaders.”
Moshe Dayan, the Israeli military leader, played a key role in four wars—but he also became a crusader for peace, and helped negotiate the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty, helped negotiate cease-fire talks between Israel and Jordan, and participated in the Camp David Accords, which provided a framework for peace in the Middle East. All these advances toward peace were achieved by people sitting down and talking with—and listening to—
their enemies. Dayan once said, “If you want to make peace, you don’t talk to your friends; you talk to your enemies.”
What a radical idea!
“When you are right, you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong you cannot be too conservative.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
